Hideaway BBQ, Raleigh NC, Exterior (11K)

A new BBQ joint / Music venue has opened up on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh just south of the 440 beltline. As a music venue I give this place five stars. They have music almost every night featuring local and national touring acts. The sound is good and they specialize in honky-tonk, country, folk, and bluegrass. It's great to see a local venue focusing on this kind of music.

However the BBQ end of things gets only two stars in my book. I had the combo plate with KC spareribs and pulled pork. The ribs were tender, but had no bark on them at all. They were untrimmed and served "wet" but lacked flavor and were a bit bland. The restaurant adheres to no particular style, they advertise that they serve all styles of BBQ. On the table there were many different kinds of sauces. I remember "Eastern NC" (vinegar based sauce) "Mountain sauce" (tomato base, but still very thin), one with no label that I would call a "Thick and Sticky" sauce, tomato base with lots of honey in it, and a hot sauce.

The pulled pork was better and actually quite tasty, but nothing to shout from the rooftops about. The sides were great (slaw, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese were the ones I tried) and a big basket of delicious hushpuppies was delivered to the table right after we sat down.

They had brisket, chicken and other BBQ staples, but I can only comment on what I tried. They were quite busy when we went and my wife's food actually came out cold. They were accommodating however and brought her a new plate steaming hot.

I would definitely go there again because of the great music and the atmosphere. There are country music posters and memorabilia covering the entire restaurant. But next time I'll stick with a pork sandwich or maybe the pulled pork plate and not get the ribs again.

This is just my two cents, I encourage others to try it and see if maybe I hit it on a bad night. I'd be curious to hear how the brisket is.

Of course maybe my low rating is because I had Stevenson's BBQ the night before in Benson, NC. Now that is some tasty Eastern NC style BBQ! Their pulled pork is loaded with flavor and is very authentic.

Smoke away, Anson
